If you are in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS):

  • Review your retirement guidelines, options, and eligibility. Members can contact TRS at (800) 223-8778 or visit TRS online at trs.Texas.gov.
  • Purchase special service credit for retirement credit or transfer service credit, if applicable.
  • Contact TRS at (800) 223-8778 to request a copy of the TRS 18 form (Request for Estimate of Retirement Benefits).
  • Complete the TRS 18 form and return it to TRS to receive a retirement packet

Contact Human Resources to set up an appointment to:

  • Complete and discuss packet/forms/eligibility. (If TRS, 3-6 mo. is appropriate)
  • Verify retiree medical eligibility, Medicare, etc.
  • If eligible for retiree medical, complete the ERS Insurance Enrollment forms. (at least 90 days prior to retirement date to avoid delays)

Current ERS Retiree Medical Eligibility Guidelines

If you are retiring with Texas Employees Group Benefits Program (GBP) insurance as a Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) or Optional Retirement Program (ORP) member, you may be eligible to enroll in the GBP insurance program as a TRS/ORP retiree.

  •  Meet Rule of 80 (Age + Number of years of creditable state service = 80)
  • 10 years of service credit with an agency or higher ed institute that participates in the GBP

OR

  • Age 65 with at least 10 years in GBP

**Note: ISDs and UT/A&M Systems do not participate in GBP. If your last place of public employment is with an ISD, you won’t be eligible for GBP retiree insurance.

IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT INSURANCE: Health and other insurance benefits for employees and retirees are subject to change based on available state funding. The Texas Legislature determines the level of funding for such benefits and has no continuing obligation to provide those benefits beyond each fiscal year.
