- Overexposure to sun destroys outer layers of skin and damages blood vessels below skin.
- Sunburns can cause skin cancer years after initial exposure to sun.

Prevention
- Wear long sleeved shirts and long pants. (lightweight, light colored clothing reflects heat and sunlight better than dark colors)
- Wear hats with wide brim that protects eyes, ears and back of the neck.
- Tuck a bandanna into the back of a billed cap to protect ears and neck.
- Apply sunscreen to skin at regular intervals (re-apply after getting wet or perspiring).
- Limit sun exposure – seek shade.
- Protect eyes with sunglasses.
Planning/Packing Guide
- Light-weight, light-colored clothing
- Long sleeved shirts & long pants (also protects against insect bites and scratches)
- Wide brimmed hat (or ball cap with bandanna)
- Bandanna
- Gloves – lightweight, cotton
- Sunscreen with SPF ≥ 30
- Sunglasses
- Do NOT bring:
- Shorts or cut-offs
- Short-sleeved or sleeveless shirts or halter tops
Symptoms
- First-degree burn:
- Pink or red skin where exposed to the sun
- Pain
- Second-degree burn:
- Blisters
- Swelling
- Fever
- Headaches
First Aid
- Seek shade.
- Apply cool water, aloe, or other soothing lotion to affected skin.
- Do NOT break blisters.
- If blisters break, clean the area to prevent infection and apply antibacterial ointment.
- Give OTC pain relievers such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen or acetaminophen.
- Do NOT use petroleum jelly, butter or other home remedies as these will delay healing.
