Phi Alpha Honor Society

Phi Alpha was established in 1962. The purposes of the Honor Society are to provide a closer bond among students of social work and promote humanitarian goals and ideals. Further, Phi Alpha fosters high standards of education for social workers and invites into membership those who have attained excellence in scholarship and achievement in social work. At present, there are over 450 chapters of the Honor Society in schools around the country, including the established Delta Kappa chapter here at MSU.

Undergraduate Requirements

  • Declared and currently enrolled as a Social Work major
  • Achieved Sophomore status with at least 45 credit hours
  • Completed nine credits of required Social Work courses
  • Achieved an overall grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Achieved a 3.25 grade point average in required Social Work courses
  • Rank in the top 35% of your class

Membership dues for Phi Alpha cost $60 for a lifetime membership, once accepted, and you can pay online through our Phi Alpha store. You may also use the Phi Alpha store to donate to Phi Alpha, and/or purchase the Phi Alpha stole or Phi Alpha Blue & Gold Honor cord for graduation.

Social Workers Acting Together (S.W.A.T.)

Social Workers Acting Together (SWAT) is the student social work organization. The purpose is for students to act as a unifying force within the social work discipline. The goal is to affiliate social work students with the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and to promote excellence in social work education.

There is a $10 membership fee per year, which you can pay online. If you would like to donate to SWAT, you may also donate online. You may also purchse your social work liability insurance online. Meetings are held monthly during the Fall and Spring semester, and membership is open to all students majoring in social work.
