Substantial, annually renewable scholarships are available to theatre majors through a number of endowments. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of student auditions in the area of emphasis (performance or design/technology), high school or junior college grade point average, and ACT or SAT scores. In addition to scholarships, a number of student assistantships, salaried at the level of minimum wage, offer dedicated theatre majors the opportunity to develop leadership skills and to gain "real world" experience that bolsters their marketability for graduate school and careers in theatre. Student assistants create the season brochure, programs for each MSU Theatre production, and other promotional materials. Other duties include organizing and running the MSU Theatre Box Office, designing and mounting lobby displays, and scheduling photo calls and television interviews.
Student assistants create the costumes and costume accessories for MSU Theatre productions, under the supervision of the faculty comstume designer. Many costumes are newly constructed while some are pulled from costume storage and modified.
Working under the faculty supervisor of the scene shop, a group of student assistants create the scenery for MSU Theatre productions. They also help with the construction of properties and with the implementation of lighting.
