Join the Band!

Tradition is an important part of Texas universities. The Golden Thunder Marching Band has been bringing spirit, color, and music to campus for years. We would love for you to become a part of the band's life and experience the pageantry, excitement, and dedication to excellence for yourself.

Never marched before? We'll teach you!

Not a music major? Not a problem! The bands are open to ALL MAJORS on campus!

Worried about the time commitment? With many majors represented in our band, let us know your area of interest. We will have a student contact you and let you know how it works with your upcoming course of study.

Prospective Members

Prospective members are invited to contact us for more information about the program. Members of the band staff, including the directors and current members, will be happy to answer your questions by phone or in person. Students who plan on visiting Wichita Falls should contact us first in the event that a tour of the campus, facilities, or any other questions can be done.

If you would like to learn more about joining the Golden Thunder Marching Band and join us in 2019 and beyond, please contact Dr. Luttrell at

Not an MSU student?

You do not have to be an MSU student to participate. Part-time students or students attending other schools (such as Vernon) can take Marching Band as an extension course.

Post-secondary option (PSEO) programs have not been discussed for high school students as of yet. If interested, please contact your high school counselor for further information.

Time Commitment

Marching band season officially begins with August Camp on August 17th, 2019, the seven-day training period that starts in late August and ends the Friday before classes start. When fall semester classes begin, the band meets Tuesday and Thursday from 8:00-9:20 a.m. Additional rehearsals are held on Saturday afternoons (4:30-6:00 p.m.) before all home football games. The rehearsals avoid conflicts with most classes and allow residence hall students ample time to attend evening meals.

August Camp

August Camp, the intensive, in-residence preparation camp where students learn music and marching fundamentals, marks the official start of marching band season. Students residing on campus move in Saturday morning, then join up with the band that afternoon to hand out music, equipment, check scholarship information, and begin rehearsals. Registration materials are emailed late July to prospective members currently on the Marching Band recruiting list. A nominal fee covers the cost of gloves and t-shirt for the season. All members are responsible for their own marching shoes (white only). Please email or call the Ensemble Office at 940-397-4267 if you need registration materials or have questions.

Registration and Freshman Orientation

New students must attend University orientation, currently held during camp. Students who are assigned orientation dates during the Camp period should contact their college representative and ask to have their orientation rescheduled. You should register for MUSC 1021-4021 which carries 1 academic credit. Part-time students can register through the College of Continuing and Professional Studies. Please call 940-397-4267 for more information.

Drumline “Auditions” for current open positions for fall 2019 will be held during camp. Please consider auditioning for a pep band at the beginning of October this fall. We are always looking for great drumset players!

If you have any questions, please contact us at

Woodwinds and Brass

There are no auditions for woodwind and brass members of the marching band. Part placements will occur during August Band Camp.

Color Guard

Color Guard auditions are an in-person Color Guard Camp, which will be announced shortly at a later time.

Feature Twirlers

Our feature twirler position is currently filled. We will post new information as the position becomes available.

Special Events

Homecoming weekend festivities include a Thursday bonfire/pep rally, and rehearsal, parade, and game on Saturday. Each year the band also performs at least one special performance for the WFISD Pre-UIL event (on a Monday night), as well as the UIL Region Contest held on a Saturday (usually the 2nd or 3rd weekend in October). New events such as Band Day and the Marching Band Banquet bring marching band members together.

Above all, we are looking for the best, brightest, and talented people that make up Midwestern State University. For more information, or if you have any questions, please contact Dr. Matthew Luttrell at We want you to be a part of the Golden Thunder Marching Band!
