The Materials Science Laboratory is where we train students to be aware of what materials they use and what limits these materials have as they go on to careers in designing and building the things that we depend on every day. Testing is a big part of what an engineer must do to make sure that the steel and cement used in the bridge we cross every morning will keep holding us up in the decades to come. Engineers have to understand how the plastics used in our drinking cups will react to heat and how materials added to glass can make it safer and tougher. Here in our Materials Science Lab we seek to train our students not just in the techniques, but in the thought processes that will make them successful Engineers for a lifetime.
