Welcome to the Department of Mass Communication

Thank you for visiting the MSU Mass Communication Department. With an average of 140 mass comm majors each year, the department is large enough to offer a wide range of classes and opportunities yet small enough to provide a personal connection. Students will find professors with open doors who are willing to help navigate the curriculum, scholarships, careers and most anything else that comes up.

Our students win awards in state, regional and national competitions on an annual basis, most recently the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association, the Broadcast Education Association and Collegiate Broadcasting Inc. Graduates have gone on to successful careers in media-related fields such as television, journalism, advertising, public relations, management, event-planning, teaching, law and marketing. Alumni have won many awards including Pulitzers and Emmys and gone on to some of the best graduate schools in the country.

If you have any questions please contact Dr. Jim Sernoe. He is always happy to talk to prospective students about the terrific experience you will have as a mass communication major.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Mass Communication program is to prepare Bachelor of Arts graduates for employment in the multidiscipline media arena and/or graduate education. The mission will be achieved by evolving curriculum that stresses both theoretical principles and practical application of current theory.
