- Climate change reporting — With a focus on one of the most important stories of this generation, climate change, stories in this category can be submitted in any platforms (print, broadcast, online). A statement explaining why this coverage was included in the publication is required. (Submit PDF.)
- Social justice coverage — With a focus on social justice and opportunities, stories in this category can be submitted in any platforms (print, broadcast, online). A statement explaining why this coverage was included in the publication is required. (Submit PDF.)

Photojournalism
- News/feature photo — A single image with caption (in the image metadata) that captures a timely visual story and displays news value and evidence of on-the-spot coverage or delivers a human-interest story with the emphasis on people in their environment. Includes caption. (Submit high-res file as RGB/JPEG.)
- Sports photo — A single image with caption (in the image metadata) that captures the competitive action and emotion of athletes on school teams competing in games, matches and meets or in personal, non-team sports. Also includes human interest images and profiles that communicate a story other than direct action on the playing field. Reaction photos of fans should be entered as news/feature photos.
