Senate Bill 1210 states that recipients of Texas state exemptions and/or waivers, including the Hazlewood Act, must meet Financial Aid's satisfactory academic progress (SAP) requirement of a grade point average (GPA) of 2.000 for undergraduate students and 3.000 for graduate students. Also, recipients must not be in excess hours status.
Title 38, Chapter I, Part 21 states that recipients of federal VA education benefits must maintain their institution’s standard satisfactory progress in order to continue receiving educational benefits. Midwestern State University’s satisfactory academic progress (SAP) is a grade point average (GPA) of 2.000 for undergraduate students and 3.000 for graduate students.
Students who wish to use Hazlewood and/or federal VA benefits but do not meet the minimum GPA or are in excessive hours status may submit an appeal using the form below. Email the completed form with a wet signature to our email address with any supporting documentation. We recommend you provide a letter explaining why you are under the minimum GPA and what your plan of action is to ensure that you raise your GPA above the minimum requirement.
You may submit an appeal to continue using your benefits for an upcoming semester as early as one week after the end of the previous semester. If you are unsure whether or not you need to appeal, you may contact us or you may simply submit a Benefit Request Form as normal. We check student GPAs at the time of certification, and if you do not meet the minimum required GPA, we will contact you about submitting an appeal.
Once submitted, your appeal will be forwarded to the SAP Appeal Committee. If approved, we may be able to reinstate your Hazlewood and/or VA benefits. Due to the timing of the appeal process, a prompt response to our email is critical for the possible use of benefits.
