IELI Program Overview 


IELI prepares students for university success. Students attend 20 hours of class per week, Monday through Friday. Classes are conveniently located on the MSU Campus. In addition to class time, students should expect to spend 15 to 20 hours per week on homework. Students may enroll in the 8-week Academic English Program for Fall 2022.

There are a total of 2 levels currently available for students who are interested in coming to MSU to start before their degree seeking program. Course placements is based according to the results of the IELI placements tests and/or Duolingo, IELTS, TOEFL Scores. All new students must take placements tests.

Students are encouraged to participate in campus activities to further their English. We also provide opportunities to practice with American Conversation Partners.

 

  • Level 4 – Half Term 8 weeks – Dates: 3rd October – 2nd December, 2022 – Price: $2,425
  • Level 3 – Full Term 16 weeks – Dates: 15th Aug – 9th December, 2022 – Price: $4,850

 (NB. Spring 2023 begins 17 January, 2023)

*New students must have some English skills before attending classes. Students must be able to read and write simple sentences in English, understand and use vocabulary, and follow simple directions in order to start in Level 3.

* This amount covers IELI tuition only. Additional fees will apply for housing, parking ($25.00), wellness center membership ($130.00) for summer 2021), food, insurance, and miscellaneous.

Level Descriptions:

 Full Term (Level 3): Students at a B1 level need more time to work on their English skills to ensure they will be prepared for their study program. Students concentrate on developing fundamental English skills in an interactive classroom setting. Course work emphasizes those skills necessary for effective oral and written communication. Instruction covers all areas of language development: practical vocabulary, basic language structures and the essentials of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students continue to develop fluency and accuracy. Course work focuses on comprehensive skills and academic preparation skills, including the fundamentals of essay writing and the development of critical reading, listening and note-taking skills. By the end of the 16 weeks, students will have completed the B2 level and be ready to enter their Academic program at MSU.

 Half Term (Level 4): Students at a low B2 level need some brush-up and not as much time to improve their English skills. Students continue to develop fluency and accuracy. Course work focuses on comprehensive skills and academic preparation skills, including the fundamentals of essay writing and the development of critical reading, listening and note-taking skills. Students will focus on diverse areas of interest such as current issues, cross-cultural concerns, vocabulary expansion, public speaking, pronunciation, advanced reading and writing, and business English. By the end of the eight weeks, students will have completed a complete B2 level course and be ready to go into their Academic program at MSU.


Please note, if you are attending classes on an F-1 student visa, you are required to take all of the classes necessary for your level. There is a mandatory attendance policy for students on an F-1 Visa. Students will need to confirm arrival dates with a DSO upon acceptance into the IELI program*

If students do not pass their specific level, at the IELI instructor's discretion, they may be required to repeat levels for added review and support.**
