Who can be a Faculty/Staff Mentor?
Any faculty or professional staff member who has a genuine interest in first-year student success can be a mentor.
Should the mentor primarily teach core courses or first-year students?
No. The first-year seminar sections are not linked to core courses, so teaching primarily first-year students is not a requirement to be a mentor.
What does the mentor do?
The Faculty/Staff Mentors help the Peer Educators facilitate the seminar classes. They do not attend every week, but they do visit the class about three times a semester. They help with managing the materials and resources in D2L, and they help with reporting assessment data to the FMA Office. Additionally, they help students feel connected to MSU and its academic programs.
Do mentors get paid?
Yes, there is a $500 stipend for faculty and staff who agree to mentor a section of First-year Mustangs Adventure.
What is the time commitment?
We ask that mentors dedicate approximately 30 hours over the course of the entire fall semester to FMA. This time includes training sessions, attending three seminar sessions, and communicating with the Peer Educator.
