Economically, culturally, linguistically there are many connections between the US and Germany. Over one thousand American companies do business with German-speaking countries and over one thousand companies based in German-speaking countries have subsidiaries in the U.S. Knowing German and understanding German culture can boost your chances of getting a job and increase your ability to undertake research in the sciences, history, philosophy, art, and many other fields. About 20% of all Americans claim German ancestry. Learning German can help you discover your family roots and facilitate your travels for family research, tourism, or business. The German and English languages share a common ancestral language. This makes learning German "a natural" if you speak English.
