What Do English Majors/Minors Study?
English majors and minors at MSU engage in a dynamic and comprehensive study that develops key skills in communication, research, critical analysis, and close reading. Our curriculum teaches students both oral and written communication skills, preparing them to communicate effectively across various forms. We emphasize research skills so that students can use discipline-specific methodologies and documentation styles to address complex questions and generate insightful responses. Critical thinking is honed by applying rhetorical or literary theories to texts, allowing students to interpret literature and other forms of communication with depth and sophistication. Additionally, students develop strong reading strategies to analyze academic, professional, and literary texts for deeper meaning. These skills prepare English majors and minors for a wide range of professional paths, including writing, teaching, research, publishing, and more.
