Midwestern State University processes student loans via the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program, wherein the federal government serves as the lending institution in lieu of a private lender, such as a bank or a credit union. Additional information regarding the Direct Loan Program is available at https://studentaid.ed.gov
(do not complete the process below unless you have been awarded a Direct PLUS Loan by the MSU Financial Aid Office)
AFTER you accept your Direct PLUS Loan on MSU's Portal:
NOTE: The PARENT must complete the PLUS Loan Application process below for EACH PLUS Loan. A separate application must be completed each YEAR AND separately for a SUMMER PLUS loan.
- Your PARENT must login to https://studentaid.gov and Log In using the PARENT's FSA ID and password. Select 'Apply For Aid'. Under 'Apply for a PLUS Loan', select 'Apply for a Parent PLUS Loan'; Complete PLUS Request for Parents -- this step MUST be completed FIRST in order to have a credit-check performed by the U.S. Department of Education. After you have completed this first step, you may proceed to Steps 2-4, as below.
- When the parent's credit-check has been reviewed and the PLUS Loan approved, your PARENT must complete a PLUS Electronic Master Promissory Note (EMPN). Now click on 'Complete Master Promissory Note' , then click on 'PLUS MPN for Parents' and complete Steps 1-4 completely and accurately; again, your PARENT's personal information ( SSN, DOB, etc...) must be used, NOT the student's personal information . (NOTE: On STEP 4, parent must scroll down and click on your student's name as you must complete a MPN for your student).
*Your parent MAY be required to complete PLUS Credit Counseling if (a)the PLUS Loan is denied due to adverse credit and your parent submits an appeal, or (b) your parent is required to have an endorser on the PLUS Loan application. You will receive notification from studentloans.gov if Credit Counseling is required for your parent.
- When the MSU Financial Aid Office receives the PLUS pre-approval and the EMPN from the Department of Education, processing of your PLUS Loan will continue. Once the process is complete, your PLUS Loan funds will be released to your student account during each registration period.
- We also strongly encourage you to review our Direct Loan information for more details regarding the Direct Loan program.
