IMPORTANT: PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR MUSTANGS ID# ON ALL PAPERWORK !!!!!

NOTE:  In May 2022, the US Department of Education waived MOST verification requirements for the 2022-23 year.

  • The IRS Data Retrieval Tool (IRS DRT) is available NOW by the U.S. Department of Education which allows the student/parent to transfer their 2020 income tax return information onto the 2022-23 FAFSA application. Students are STRONGLY encouraged to utilize the IRS DRT .  If you do not utilize the IRS DRT, you may be selected for verification and, if selected, students/parents MUST submit an IRS Tax RETURN TRANSCRIPT OR copies of signed 2020 tax returns.
  • For taxpayers who filed an AMENDED IRS Income Tax Return, please provide the following:
1. An IRS Tax Return Transcript (which does not have to be signed), OR
A signed copy of the 2020 Tax Return OR
Unchanged IRS DRT data already provided on your FAFSA
AND
2. A signed copy of the IRS Form 1040X that was filed with the IRS.

  • Independent Students and Parents of Dependent students who are nontax filers OR tax filers who received an extension who still have not filed their 2020 income tax return must provide confirmation of non-filing DATED ON/AFTER OCTOBER 1, 2021.  Student and parent confirmation of non-filing can be obtained from the IRS (irs.gov) using Form 4506-T (check Box 7) AND enter the date of 12/31/2020 (Box 9).  If appropriate, a similar confirmation from another taxing authority (e.g., a U.S. territory or a foreign government) is also acceptable. IF you are unable to obtain Verification on Non-Filing within the IRS 10-day waiting period, you can complete the Statement of Non-Filing Status and return to our office.

  • If a student/parent reports income-earned-from-work but did NOT file a tax return, student/parent must submit W2’s to the MSU Financial Aid Office to document the income earned from work.
