    POSTER PRESENTATIONS

    April 8, 2011 (Local)

Dr. James Johnston, Dr. James Killion, Dr. Beth Vealé, and Robert Comello, presented a poster at the second Annual Scholarship Colloquium at Midwestern State University. The title was “U.S. Technologist’s Radiation Exposures Perceptions and Practices.”

    April 8, 2011 (Local)

Dr. James Johnston, Dr. Jeff Killion, Dr. Phyllis Behrens, Barbara Curran, Dr. Gary Fashimpar, Dr. Laura Fidelie, Jennifer Gresham, and Dr. Kim Robinson presented a poster at the second Annual Scholarship Colloquium at Midwestern State University relating to interdisciplinary education. The title was “An Instrument to Assess Effective Communication Skills in Healthcare Students.”

    APPLIED RESEARCH

    Radiation Dose Trends Project

Radiation dose trends and radiographer perceptions and responsibilities. This research focuses on the recent change in primary source of radiation exposure to the U.S. population from natural sources to man-made sources and the role and perceptions of the U.S. radiographers in this trend. A national survey was conducted in 2009 with completion and presentation of results in December of 2009. A manuscript was submitted and accepted for publication early in 2011

    Quantification of Effective Communication Skills

This research project with the Interdisciplinary Committee will ultimately create an instrument to assess communication skill to use as one admission criterion for prospective healthcare students. A literature review was completed and from that an instrument created. It was pilot tested in spring of 2010. A case study of the college of Health Science and Human Services students was conducted. A manuscript was published titled An Instrument for Assessing Communication Skills of Healthcare and Human Services Students in the peer review Internet Journal of Allied Health Science and Practice. Faculty members included Dr. James Johnston (Radiologic Science), Dr. Laura Fidelie-Woods (Criminal Justice), Dr. Kathleen Roberts (Nursing) and Dr. Phyllis Behrens (Health and Public Administration).

    Community Profile Project

Wichita Falls Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation Community Profile Report. This research project began with an analysis of provided state and county data regarding women’s breast health and breast health services. After analysis of this data, two surveys were created to gather additional information from providers and key informants in the service area to fill gaps in the data. From the analysis of all data gathered a report was written summarizing findings, determining priorities for the affiliate, and formulating an action plan to address these priorities over the next three years (2009-2012). The report was submitted to the Susan G. Komen Headquarters on behalf of the Wichita Falls Affiliate March 2009.

A second Community Profile Project Report was completed using the above methodology in 2011. From the analysis of all data gathered a report was written summarizing findings, determining priorities for the affiliate, and formulating an action plan to address these priorities over the next three years (2011-2013). The report was submitted to the Susan G. Komen Headquarters on behalf of the Wichita Falls Affiliate March 2011.

    Math Anxiety Project

A team consisting of a graduate student and three faculty members (Donna Wright, James Johnston, and I) assessed math anxiety among entering radiography students. Are goal of the study was to better understand the variables affecting students’ career choices and their anxieties about mathematics. Results were published in Radiologic Science and Education (2008).

    Radiologist Assistant Performance Improvement Project

Radiologist Assistant students and three faculty members (Donna Wright, James Johnston, and I) developed an instrument to collect data in the clinical environments. This was the first official formal documentation of the emerging role of Radiologist Assistants. Results were published in Radiologic Technology (2008). Research for this project is still ongoing.

New Radiographic Positioning Landmarks for the Scapula Project 2005-2008

Three Radiologic faculty members (James Johnston, Bob Comello, and I) researched new radiographic positioning landmarks for the scapula. We conducted an extensive review of literature, compiled data from surveying students at clinical, performed experiments in the radiology lab with phantoms, and gathering data from the radiology department at United Regional Hospital. From this research new positioning landmarks have been identified that improve the positioning of the scapula for various medical imaging examinations. The clinical data collection was completed and the subsequent paper published in Radiologic Technology (2008).
