Course Objectives

  1. Students will acquire, synthesize, evaluate and use information gathered to make sound administrative decisions and develop a personal philosophy on coaching athletes.
  2. Students will gain foundational knowledge of effective administration, behavior management and coaching skills and techniques.
  3. Students will gain knowledge and experience in budgeting, evaluating, planning and risk management specific to sports teams.
  4. Students will gain knowledge about the professional opportunities available through sport and leisure services.

Course Expectations

  1. Students must develop their personal coaching philosophy.
  2. Students must submit completed coursework that provides evidence of their ability to undertake and complete common administrative and coaching tasks required of an athletic sport coach.
  3. Student will be able to develop a practice schedule, equipment budget performance assessment and safety plan to be used within their chosen sport.
  4. Students will perform interviews with professionals in the field of sport and leisure services to gain information on career options and opportunities after graduation.

Submission Format Policy

Course Policies for the Preparation and Submission of Course Assignments and Projects:


  • Unless otherwise noted, all assignments must be submitted via the designated area on D2L.
  • All assignments and learning activities must be completed following the grading scales and requirements provided to you on D2L.
  • All work must be original work and performed by each individual student. All group work must be original work by that group and performed by your group.
  • Assignments are graded on the basis of your adherence to the specified requirements in the syllabus and on d2l.
  • Announcements: Please check the Announcements area first when you log in to the course, since that is where I will put important information.
  • By logging onto D2L and by submitting each assignment, you are certifying that your work is original and that you are the individual that enrolled in the course.

Assignment Deadlines

All assignments, unless otherwise noted must be typed in 11or 12 point Aerial or New Times Roman font.  All assignments must be turned in by the time designated on the day they are due in the D2L portal unless otherwise stated.  All Late Work and Discussion Posts will incur up to a 5 point deduction (i.e. 1-5 hours late = 1 pt; 1 day late= 3pts; 2 days late=5 pts) from the assignment total point value. Any assignments turned in more than 2 days late or not turned in on D2L WILL NOT BE GRADED and WILL RECEIVE A SCORE OF 0 (ZERO). 

Note: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.

Plagiarism Policy

Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not.

Academic Integrity:   Plagiarism Statement

“By enrolling in this course, the student expressly grants MSU a ‘limited right’ in all intellectual property created by the student for the purpose of this course. The ‘limited right’ shall include but shall not be limited to the right to reproduce the student’s work product in order to verify originality, authenticity, and educational purposes.” from Student Handbook

  1. All class members are to follow the fundamental principles of academic integrity outlined in the Student Handbook. The basic principle is that students take credit only for the ideas and efforts that are their own.
  2. Any act of academic dishonesty in this course may be reported to Student Life.
  3. Included among dishonest behaviors in an academic setting are cheating (using or attempting to use unauthorized assistance, materials, information, or study aids in an academic exercise), fabrication (falsifying or inventing information in an academic exercise), plagiarism (adopting or reproducing of ideas, words, or statements of another person without appropriate acknowledgement), interference (stealing, changing, destroying, or impeding another student's work), and facilitating (intentionally or knowingly helping or attempting to help another student commit an act of academic misconduct.

Honesty in completing assignments is essential to the mission of the university and to the development of the personal integrity of the student. Cheating, plagiarism, or other kinds of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated and will result in appropriate sanctions that may include failing an assignment, failing the class, or being suspended or expelled. Suspected cases in this course may be reported to Student Life.

Writing Proficiency Requirement

All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed the 6 hours of Communication Core and and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
