Course Objectives

Course Objectives: Radiologic technologists interested in magnetic resonance imaging should demonstrate

increased awareness of MRI safety, recognition of MRI instrumentation and coils, and basic knowledge of MRI physical

principles and data acquisition. This course provides opportunities to become familiar with various MRI theories and

concepts used in the MRI suite.

Upon completion of this course, the student will:

Recognize radiofrequency coils and other components of the MRI scanner.

Define the parts of the atom and explain how the parts of the atom are used in MRI.

Describe the effect of intrinsic and extrinsic parameters on MRI scanning, the patient, and image quality.

Differentiate between pulse sequences and identify the strengths and weaknesses of each one.


Course Expectations




Students can proceed through the course content at their own pace within the boundaries set by the Course

Schedule and the MSU Academic Calendar. Each unit has a quiz. The units are NOT taught in the order presented in the

textbook. PowerPoint slides are provided as lecture notes, but quiz questions may be from the PowerPoint slides OR the

textbook. Be sure to read the chapters in your textbook! Please see the Course Schedule for specific information about

activities and due dates.


The course content is divided by chapters. Additional resource material is available through the Internet. Each chapter

has a quiz. See the Course Schedule at the end of this syllabus for quiz deadlines. Please note: we do not cover the

chapters in the order of the textbook!

Discussions 5%

The purpose of the discussions is to begin to collaborate and think deeper about the topics in MRI. These are; Introductions, An MRI Question, and PowerPoint Project Posting and Viewing. Post an original discussion in each of the discussion areas and provide at least one response to each discussion. Although, you may respond to as many as you like. Follow the due dates for these in the course schedule.
Introductions-Introduce yourselves in the introduction discussion board by the due date in the course schedule. After your introductions, you may use the discussion as an area to talk with your classmates.
An MRI Question- In this discussion area students will post an MRI question. This may be a question about new technology in MRI, MRI research that has intrigued you, MRI protocols, MRI contrast media, MRI safety, or any number of MRI questions. Post something about MRI that you would like to know, or have already found an answer to that you think would be a good MRI discussion question. Reply to one other post. Provide either an answer to the question, your suggestions, or an educated theory.
Project Posting and Viewing- In this discussion area students will upload their PowerPoint presentations for classmates to view. Students should spend some time looking at these. Comment on at least one about what you learned. Discussions in this area should be centered on the topics.

Independent Reading

Students should read each assigned chapter, answer the multiple choice questions available on the companion website

available with the book, review the internet resources associated with each chapter, and review the PowerPoint

presentations for each module.

There is an interactive tutorial from Berlex included in the “Extras” section of the course. If you have time this can be extremely helpful.

Online Open Book Unit Quizzes - 30%

When a student has reviewed a unit and is ready for the quiz, he or she will log on to D2L and receive a customized timed

unit quiz consisting of randomized multiple choice questions. See the course schedule for the recommended due dates of

the unit quizzes.

RADS 4743 Magnetic Resonance Imaging – Fall 2013 5

The student can take any quiz at any time throughout the course and in any sequence they prefer but all quizzes

must be completed by November 30, 2015. If a quiz is not completed by this DUE DATE a “0” will be given for the

missing quiz. The dates in the syllabus reflect goal dates for quizzes to be completed in order to progress through the

course in a timely manner. If the student does not complete the quizzes by a goal date there will be no grade penalty.

If students have technical difficulties during a quiz, they should use the “Help” link at the top toolbar, contact the MSU

Information Systems Support Staff, and send an email right away to the course instructor explaining what happened.

If a student finds a faulty quiz test item or believes that a quiz question has been scored incorrectly, he or she should send

an email to the course instructor that includes the following:

 Unit Quiz Number (1 - 12)

 Question Stem

 Answer Scored as Correct by the Computer

 Answer the Student Thinks Should be Correct

 Rationale Supporting Why the Student’s Answer is Correct

 Page numbers must be included when referencing the textbook in a rationale

After reviewing the case, if the course instructor thinks a revision is justified, the student’s quiz score will be revised to

reflect the additional points and the test bank will be updated. It may take several weeks for the student to receive a

response because the instructor works on batches of questions for a particular quiz at a time.

Projects 30%

You must complete the following projects:  PowerPoint presentation and a Laboratory project.  

A project proposal form is located in the content section of the course.  These must be approved by the instructor before you begin your projects. Your proposal form should be submitted to the dropbox no later than September 7, 2015.


         PowerPoint Presentation- 20%

Before beginning this project, a proposal form must have been submitted and your topic must be approved by the instructor.   No project will be graded without approval.


A working knowledge of Microsoft Office PowerPoint (or other presentation software) is a fundamental skill for all baccalaureate level students. 


Each student will create a PowerPoint (or similar) presentation consisting of a minimum of eight (8) slides and a maximum of fifteen (15) slides based on at least three (3) PEER-REVIEWED or SCHOLARLY journal articles that refer specifically to the role of magnetic resonance imaging used in research or with innovated technology. For example, the student may summarize three journal articles that describe the effectiveness of MRI scanning for the staging of Alzheimer’s Disease, or summarize research on the techniques and use of Surgical MRI.  PowerPoint presentations should contain:


  • Relevant, up-to-date (within past 5 years) information on MRI related research or technology
  • Scan protocols (for research or pathology cases)
  • Contraindications and/or concerns (example:  non-ferrous surgical instruments in the MRI scan room)
  • Pictures! (please give credit to the authors for these)
  • A reference page


NOTE ON REFERENCES: Peer review journals use an editorial review board that evaluates the article for accuracy. Publications or magazines like RT Image, Advance, Decisions in Imaging Economics, and Applied Radiology are not peer-reviewed. Journals such as Radiologic Technology, Radiologic Science & Education, and Radiology Management are peer-reviewed. You should be able to look at the inside cover of a journal or on a web site to see if the journal has a review board. Most likely if you cannot find anything about a review board then the journal is not peer reviewed. The journal homepage should also indicate if the journal is peer-reviewed.

Note:  You will not be allowed to test if the PowerPoint has not been completed. Follow the deadlines posted in the course schedule.


         Laboratory Project- 10%

Before beginning this project, a proposal form must have been submitted must be approved by the instructor.   No project will be graded without approval.

The laboratory project for this course requires no patient contact.  Instead, it is designed to introduce the student to the rules and regulations set forth by OSHA and the FDA concerning the strength, safety, and use of magnetic fields in medicine.  Again, the laboratory may be completed at any time during the enrollment period, but must be turned in by October 19, 2014.

You must make arrangements with an MRI facility on your own to perform this lab. State law requires that you are current on your immunizations if you will be in the facility.  You should be able to complete this lab without going to a clinical site by using other resources like the telephone or Internet.

Complete the form available in D2L and submit by the due date. The results can be in a short answer or short report format. Please send only typed reports. You will not be allowed to test if this laboratory has not been completed. Follow the deadlines posted in the course schedule.

Comprehensive Final Exam - 35%

Comprehensive Final Exam 35%

The final examination is a proctored, "closed-book", comprehensive examination of 50 multiple-choice questions. Students are not allowed to print the final exam. The final exam is a timed, two (2) hour test. Students must complete the final (and all course work) by the dates published in the course schedule. The unit chapters, PowerPoints, and examinations can be utilized to review for the final. You may bring scratch paper with only ProctorU’s phone number on it.
Be aware certain equipment is required, so review the instructions as soon as possible.

  • The comprehensive proctored final exam will be administered using Desire2Learn (D2L) and ProctorU online proctoring. For ProctorU instructions please read the ProctorU student instruction guide included in the content section of this course, and you may also follow the link
  • You may schedule your exam at any time within the testing dates in the course schedule, but you must have ALL of your course work complete, including the quizzes and the project or the final will not be accessible.  
  • Just keep in mind if you take the exam after hours there may not be anyone available in the event of technical problems, and you may have to reschedule.  
  • Contact a ProctorU representative to check your equipment and bandwidth real time before your test date.  If anything changes after this check (new computer, updates, ISP changes, etc.), REPEAT the check.
  • All exams are monitored and a log is created by ProctorU.  If you are disconnected during your exam, you must immediately send an email to your professor, and immediately contact ProctorU by phone. *All times will be documented!*
  • The exam MUST be taken within the scheduled test dates, regardless of any technical issues that may arise.  This is the student’s responsibility! 

Late submissions will NOT be accepted.

My suggestion is to take the exam during the first days it is available to avoid receiving a ZERO due to technical issues.  If you have to reschedule it must be within the scheduled dates and times. 

ProctorU allows you to take an exam on demand or by appointment. All appointments should be made at least three days in advance. To make an appointment, simply create an account at Once logged in, click on the “new exam” link and selecting the exam, date, and time you desire. You must submit payment (based on the length of the exam) at this time - usually about $25.00. You will receive an email confirming their reservation at the email address they provided to ProctorU. Reservations made within 72 hours of an exam are subject to a $5 late registration fee. Students without an appointment can take their exam on demand within 15, 30 or 45 minutes by using ProctorU’s convenient Take it Now feature. This premier feature is designed to give students added convenience and costs $8.75. Late registrations and Take it Now features are subject to availability. *Be mindful of when you schedule your final exam. If you schedule it outside of the 5 day work week (M-F), there may be no one at MSU available to help if you have technical problems.
Late submissions will NOT be accepted
All course requirements must be completed before a grade is awarded.

A = 100 - 90

B = 89 - 80

C = 79 - 70

D = 69 – 60

F = 59 and below

Note: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.

Academic dishonesty (cheating, plagiarism, etc.) will not be tolerated in this class. Whenever a student is unsure of

whether a particular situation will be interpreted as academic dishonesty, he/she should ask the instructor for clarification.

If students are guilty of academic dishonesty, a grade of zero (0) will be given for the quiz, assignment, or course. Cases may

also be referred to the Dean of Students for possible dismissal from the university.


By enrolling in this course, the student expressly grants MSU a “limited right” in all intellectual property created

by the student for the purpose of this course. The “limited right” shall include but shall not be limited to the right

to reproduce the student’s work product in order to verify originality and authenticity, and for educational

purposes. Specifically, faculty may submit student papers and assignments to an external agency to verify

originality and authenticity, and to detect for plagiarism.

Writing Proficiency Requirement

All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed the 6 hours of Communication Core and and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
