Course Overview

The focus of this course is to instruct health science and human services students in the role of research in interdisciplinary health studies.


Not e : This is an Interdisciplinary Research course that will be taught to nursing, radiologic science, and respiratory therapy students mixed into each course section.


Course Objectives:  Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:


·    Discuss essential components of the research process.

·    Differentiate application of selected research designs.

·    Discuss the ethical and legal aspects of research.

·    Critique selected research projects.

·    Demonstrate ability to apply research findings to professional practice issues.

Course Expectations


               COURSE MODULES (Activities and Assignments) This course is one that was constructed so that the material builds upon itself to result in an overall project and application of learning. Students can proceed through the course content at their own pace within the boundaries set by the Course Schedule and the MSU Academic Calendar, but it is not recommended to work ahead. See the Course Schedule in this syllabus for specific information about activities and due dates. If students have technical difficulties, they should use the “Help” link on D2L, contact the MSU Information Systems Support Staff, and send an email to the professor explaining what happened. Waiting until the last minute to ask for help or reporting incidents AFTER a due date or an exam expires may result in a grade of zero, even if it was a failure of D2L.  All work submitted to the instructor will be considered complete and final, and will be graded as such.  All reading assignments are mandatory and the students’ comprehension of the content will either be graded in the form of a quiz or applied in an assignment.  All assignments must be written at the baccalaureate level and will be graded for accuracy, completeness, quality, spelling, grammar, and integrity.  Because of the nature of the assignments, late submissions will not be accepted. It is the expectation of the faculty that you complete work on time. Welcome (Students should start here! - Quiz) Students should begin the course by viewing the documents found in the Welcome module. The syllabus is located here along with an overview of the course and the textbooks, as well as a document about discussion board etiquette. Finally in this section, you will find the library use video along with a quiz about the documents found in the Welcome Module. The syllabus should be reviewed by all students prior to beginning any modules. It is to be referred to throughout the semester any time the student has a question. If the answer cannot be found in the syllabus, then the instructor is to be contacted. The Welcome Quiz is for a grade and must be completed independently by the students before the remainder of the course will be available. It is worth 10% of the quiz average. Module 1 – What is Research? (Dropbox Assignment) Students should begin by reading the course notes for an overview of the module. There are assigned reading materials found in this module that the student must complete, as well as a dropbox assignment on research ethics. There is a discussion board question for this module. Module 2 – Types of Research (Quiz and Dropbox Assignment) Students should begin by reading the course notes for an overview of the module. This module is broken down into 5 types of research. Each type of research has PowerPoint presentations over the corresponding chapters in the book as well as an article for critique. After reviewing all of the material in the module, the student will complete a quiz that is comprehensive over the 5 types of research. The dropbox assignment for this module is an article critique of each of the articles provided for each type of research. There is a Word document with a form for you to use to complete this assignment. There is a discussion board question for this module. Module 3 – APA/Writing a Literature Review (Quiz & Dropbox Assignments) Students should begin by reading the course notes for an overview of the module. This module contains a PowerPoint presentation about APA. This should be viewed by the students. There is also a discussion board question for this module. After viewing the presentation, there is a quiz over proper APA formatting. You are permitted and highly encouraged to use your APA manual for this quiz. It is 50 questions and you have two (2) hours to complete the quiz. Within the APA Module you will find the Writing a Literature Review Module. Students should begin by reading the course notes for an overview of the module. This module contains three sections: Topic, Research Question, and Article Selection, APA Title and Reference Pages, and Sections of a Literature Review. The Topic, Research Question, and Article Selection section contains three documents. All should be viewed by the students. After reviewing the articles, the students should complete the Research Question Approval dropbox assignment. There is also a discussion board question for this section. The APA Title and Reference Pages section contains a document and two videos, all of which should be viewed by the students. Upon review of these materials, the students will complete a properly formatted APA Title Page and Reference List and submit it to the dropbox. The Sections of a Literature Review contains document that are for your information only. These documents will help you in the course as well as in additional courses but there is no assignment or quiz associated with these particular documents. It is still highly recommended the students read and retain these articles for future reference. Module 4 – Plagiarism & Paraphrasing (Dropbox Assignments) Students should begin by reading the course notes for an overview of the module. This module is broken down into 2 parts. The first part covers plagiarism and has a document about the MSU Student Honor Creed that must be read and an acknowledgement signed and submitted to the dropbox. Following that assignment, students are to read the Harvard Guide to Using Sources document, especially the Avoiding Plagiarism section, including all of the subheadings. Upon completion of reading that document, there is a dropbox assignment for Plagiarism Evaluation. There is a discussion board question for this section. The next section covers paraphrasing. In this section, students must read the Acknowledging Sources document. Following the reading of that document, there is a discussion board question to be completed. Finally there are 2 dropbox assignments associated with this section: Plagiarism Revision and Synthesizing Articles. Module 5 - Final Project – PowerPoint (Dropbox Assignment) Students should begin by reading the instructions for the final project. Do not skip any of the instructions. This project will be in the form of a PowerPoint presentation and will be submitted to the dropbox. This project is based on the topic you choose for the research question you will write and the assignments you will complete throughout the course. Discussion Boards There are required discussion boards, as well as social discussion boards for this course. In the social discussion boards, there is a Coffee Shop discussion board for chatting with your classmates. This board is not mandatory and will not be graded. Here you will also find the Introductions discussion board. This board IS mandatory and WILL be graded. In the required discussion boards, there are 5 topics provided. Each student is required to post one meaningful response to the question, as well as two responses to other students for each topic. The discussion boards will not open and you will not be able to see anyone else’s posts until you have created your original post. This is an open discussion; but you must keep in mind proper discussion board etiquette. Discussion boards are worth 10% of your total grade. Failure to complete discussion boards can negatively affect your grade.

Submission Format Policy

General Submission Format

Any assignments submitted electronically as a Word document attachment must follow these guidelines:


·    IBM compatible format (not MAC)

·    Word 2003 or newer version (Microsoft WORKS or WordPerfect is not acceptable)

·    Times New Roman (12 point)

·    Double spaced

·    1” margins on all sides




If a student cannot meet these requirements for electronic submission, he or she should meet individually with the faculty member to make other suitable arrangements.


All assignments must reflect baccalaureate level effort. This means that assignments must be written using standard technical writing skills. This includes appropriate spelling, grammar, sentence structure, transitions, text flow, currency of knowledge, and scope of research. Unless otherwise indicated, all assignments must be submitted as a single Word document attachment to the appropriate assignment dropbox. Assignments must be submitted by the due dates indicated at the end of the syllabus.


Students must use the following format as the title of assignment when saving the document:

Note: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.

Plagiarism Policy

Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not.

The last opportunity to drop this course with a grade of “W” is 4:00pm, October 21, 2013.

Refer to the Undergraduate Bulletin for details about receiving a grade of “Incomplete” in a course.  In an emergency or extenuating circumstance, a student may request a grade of “Incomplete” in a course before grades are submitted.  If the instructor grants the “Incomplete,” the student has until thirty (30) days after the beginning of the next long semester to complete the course requirements.  If the student does not complete the course requirements within the deadline, the grade of “Incomplete” will automatically convert into a grade of “F.”

Students must indicate the preferred email in WebWorld as well.


Faculty members will not be responsible for keeping up with other email addresses for students.

The instructor will respond or at least acknowledge email messages from students within a maximum of five (5) business days when MSU is in session.  Beyond standard university holidays and breaks, the instructor will notify students of any extended periods of time when email contact is not practical (professional meetings, etc)

Academic Conduct

RADS 3503 adheres to the MSU Code of Conduct.  In particular, academic dishonesty, however small, creates a breach in academic integrity.  A student’s participation in this course comes with the expectation that his or her work will be completed in full observance of the MSU Code of Student Conduct.  A student should consult the current Student Handbook for answers to any questions about the code.





Many components of RADS 3503 are designed to be highly interactive with students helping each other learn. Students are encouraged to take full advantage of many resources available including online Desire2Learn course resources, Internet sites, other textbooks and journals, faculty, and peers when answering objectives. This interactive collegial learning environment is conducive for life-long learning.





All components of RADS 3503 are designed to represent the efforts of each student INDIVIDUALLY and are NOT to be shared or copied (plagiarized) from other sources.    When students submit their efforts for grading, they are attesting they abided by this rule.


Cheating includes, but is not limited to, (1) use of any unauthorized assistance in taking quizzes, tests, or examinations; (2) dependence upon the aid of sources beyond those authorized by the instructor in writing papers, preparing reports, solving problems, or completing other assignments; or (3) the acquisition of tests or other academic materials belonging to the university faculty or staff without permission.


Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, the use of, by paraphrase or direct quotation without correct citation in the text and on the reference list, the published or unpublished works of another person. Students may NOT submit papers and assignments that they have previously submitted for this or other courses. The use of

materials generated by agencies engaged in "selling" term papers is also plagiarism. Students are encouraged to review the tutorials and suggested websites for more information about plagiarism. Papers and other assignments may be submitted to an external agency for verification of originality and authenticity.


Academic dishonesty (cheating, plagiarism, etc.) will not be tolerated in this class. Whenever a student is unsure of whether a particular situation will be interpreted as academic dishonesty, he/she should ask the instructor for clarification.  If students are guilty of academic dishonesty, a grade of zero (0) will be given for the quiz, assignment, etc.  Cases may also be referred to the Dean of Students for possible dismissal from the university.




By enrolling in this course, the student expressly grants MSU a “limited right” in all intellectual property created by the student for the purpose of this course.  The “limited right” shall include but shall not be limited to the right to reproduce the student’s work product in order to verify originality and authenticity,

and for educational purposes. Specifically, faculty may submit student papers and assignments to an external agency to verify originality and authenticity, and to detect for plagiarism.

Writing Proficiency Requirement

All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed the 6 hours of Communication Core and and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course. Senate Bill 11 passed by the 84th Texas Legislature allows licensed handgun holders to carry concealed handguns on campus, effective August 1, 2016.
