Course Objectives

This course covers all aspects of marine carbonate depositional systems and stratigraphy. The course will discuss characteristics of geologic and modern systems across a range of environments (shorelines, tidal flats, reefs, open shelf, deep basin etc.). Students will develop an understanding of sequence stratigraphy, identifying cycles, and the various features of the carbonate factory. Other topics include: diagenetic fabrics, ramp profiles, bioherm and reef formation, and carbonate petrology. Lecture will be supplemented by applied learning with thin sections, core, and hand samples. Concepts will be reinforced with advanced readings and discussion of carbonate-related topics including major carbonate petroleum reservoirs.

Grading Standards

Grading Standards: In this class, the following numerical equivalents for grades are used: A = 100-90% | B = 89-80% | C = 79-70% | D = 69-60% | F = 59-0%.

Submission Format Policy

Lab Exercises:  Lab exercises will be completed in-class following lecture.  We will complete at least one trip to the Oklahoma Well Log Repository to complete a carbonate core analysis project.

Paper Discussion:  Required papers will be assigned multiple times throughout the semester (see the class schedule).  All students are expected to have thoroughly read the assigned paper for the week, and should be ready to actively discuss the topic with the class.  Papers will be posted on D2L at least one week prior to the discussion day.  Participation in class discussion is expected for graduate students, and failure to interact with others during the discussion will be reflected in the student’s discussion grade (15%).

Presentations:  Each student will be personally assigned a paper that is relevant to both the class and their M.S. research.  On each presentation day, all students will give 15 minute presentations on their paper. 

Grading on the presentations is as follows:

Content and mastery of the material in the paper: 10 points

Slide design, organization, and presentation quality: 8 points

References, citation, and Q&A responses: 7 points

Examinations: Exams (midterm, 15%; final, 20%) will be “take-home” and due exactly 1 week after they are assigned.  They will be posted on D2L, and will consist of multiple essay questions.  Citation of the primary literature (i.e., journal papers) is expected in all responses.

Note: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.

Plagiarism Policy

Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not.

Attendance Requirements

Attendance is required for both lecture and lab. Absences can only be excused by contacting me in advance, prior to lecture or laboratory assignments. Absences presented after the class is over will not be accommodated except in rare circumstances. I reserve the right to drop any student from the class who has more than 3 unexcused absences. Attendance will be used to make decisions on the final grade score of students who are on the border between two letter grades.

Writing Proficiency Requirement

All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed the 6 hours of Communication Core and and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course. Senate Bill 11 passed by the 84th Texas Legislature allows licensed handgun holders to carry concealed handguns on campus, effective August 1, 2016.
