Course Objectives


Speech Fundamentals Objectives:  

      The student speaker must speak clearly and audibly and must speak on the assigned topic.  If people keep saying “what did you say?” maybe you need to take the class called Voice and Diction or get a speech department at the College to help. The Student speaker must know how to prepare, organize, write and rewrite a speech and must realize that written or oral speeches are revised and are edited before it is spoken.

                         Must know how to communicate, to individuals or of a small group.

Must know the many types of Introductions and Conclusions in a speech.

Must know where and how to use  a Thesis and Three reasons.

Must know what Transitions are and how to use them in between paragraphs.

must know how to find Sources.

Must know  how to place these sources in a speech.

must know you, the speaker, is not a credible source.   Never use “I believe”, “My thoughts are”.

must know how not to plagiarize a passage. Must know how to paraphrase a passage.

Must know how to move away from the podium.

Must know how to use their hands during a speech. Must know all Gestures are above the podium must know how to dress for a speech: dress as if you are at a job interview.

Must recognize the importance of the audience and to have eye contact with them.

must analyze and evaluate oral and written work.

 Must understand the process of Listening.

 Must know the speaking code of Ethics.

The Audience Member must: Sit still and listen.No Talking and No e-mail or taking pictures or checking your text messages during class.

Please turn off your communication devises.

There will be no answering your email or your calls during class.  If there is an emergency let me know and you may answer your phone.   If you need to look up information for the class or you take note by communicating with your self that is fine but I need to see your notes from the day’s lecture. 

Grading Standards


 Grading: At a college level the assignments are required and not ignored. If I assign a paper or speech know the due dates from the Calendar.

Plagiarism Policy

Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not.

Writing Proficiency Requirement

All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed the 6 hours of Communication Core and and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course. Campus Carry

Senate Bill 11 passed by the 84th Texas Legislature allows licensed handgun holders to carry concealed handguns on campus, effective August 1, 2016.
