Course Expectations


Student Responsibilities and Class Requirements

Students are accountable for policies regarding graduate nursing programs and completion of requirements for all graduate students as stated in the Graduate Catalog and Graduate Student Handbook. Students are responsible for making appointments with faculty concerning class assignments as necessary. This is an online class and students are expected to have adequate access to a computer and check the course via D2L on a regular basis for updates and information. Work will be submitted ELECTRONICALLY by dates due. Reading assignments and D2L learning activities, as detailed in the course calendar must be addressed and responded to promptly.  All course requirements must be met in order to pass the course. Reading assignments should be completed as outlined in the course calendar. All written assignments should be in APA, 6th edition, format. This includes citations and references. All written work submitted for evaluation is to be the work of the student who submits it.


Course Orientation – Desire to Learn (D2L)

The best way to get oriented to the course is to read the syllabus. By now, each student should be familiar with the D2L layout, (i.e. how to access the discussion board, take a quiz, and submit assignments). Note assignment due dates will be placed in syllabus. Make sure you use this as your guide for when to turn in your work. There will not be individual reminders.


D2L Readings and Content Modules

The primary purpose of providing additional readings and learning exercises is to supplement the accompanying texts. They are not intended as a substitute for the text information. It is intended to assist students in assimilating and integrating facts and ideas from the text and to provide additional information and current trends in PMHNP practice, counseling, and prescribing.

In order to pass NURS 5363 and NURS 5373 containing both didactic/classroom and clinical requirements, the student must pass both the didactic/classroom and clinical components of the course.

In addition, the student must pass both Midterm and Final Clinical Practicums to receive a passing clinical grade for the course. All required paperwork (your evaluation of your preceptor, your preceptor’s evaluation of you, sign off sheet, with your list of hours form) must be received in order to PASS the course.


If a student receives less than passing (80%) on either the average of the didactic components, the average of the clinical assignments, or either of the clinical practicum, the maximum grade earned for the course will be 79% and the student will not be permitted to progress in the program. Passing score on each practicum examination and on the average of the didactic assignments is 80%.  Only one attempt is allowed for each practicum. It is the student’s responsibility to know their grade status.


Progression Policy

Located in Catalog – A student who earns lower than a “B” in any two graduate nursing courses either the same course twice or two different courses, will be dismissed from the program. Readmission will be considered by the Graduate Curriculum and Standards Committee on an individual basis.

Assignment File Naming

All assignments will be submitted through D2L ASSIGNMENT SECTION. 

E-mailing assignments is not acceptable (unless advised to do so) and may not be considered for grading.  When uploading an assignment to the assignment section of D2L, please use the following guidelines for naming of the files. Your last name, assignment name:  Example: Smith-SoapNote3Revised.doc. 


Note: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.

Late Paper Policy


Late Assignments

Late assignments will be accepted with a deduction of 10 points for each day, up to three days total, the assignment is late.  After the third day late, the student will be awarded a 0. 


All assignments must be uploaded to D2L in the Assignment section by the due date and time.  If the student has computer problems the assignment must then be submitted on time in the D2L course webmail section ONLY WITH prior notice to faculty and subsequent approval.  This is to be used in emergency situations only.

Plagiarism Policy

Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not.

Assignment/Quiz/Exam Collaboration Policy

The faculty considers collaboration during assignments and examinations as cheating and cheating is in violation of Midwestern Policy.  A score of zero (0) will be given for students participating in collaboration of assignments and exams. Providing a student with written assignments, or examination information from a course previously taken at MSU, is cheating. Cheating is ground for dismissal from the program.

Writing Proficiency Requirement

All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed the 6 hours of Communication Core and and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
