 I am Jerry Fulford, and I am your instructor for this course.  This is a new course and as such, I look forward to your comments and input.  Please take time to really read the syllabus and course requirements so that you understand what you need to do.  By the way, this is an interdisciplinary course and you will have students in your section who are nursing, respiratory, social work, and radiologic science majors.  Your participation is critical.  Please participate fully and remember that if you don’t do your part, you hold up the rest of the group.  You will be graded on your work separately from the group if you are not participating 100%.  For this online course I am generally in my home office Monday through Saturday to answer questions by email or phone.

Course Objectives

Course Overview:

The focus of this course is to provide an interdisciplinary data analysis course specifically for health sciences and human services majors using techniques and data structures relevant to clinical investigations. General topics include choosing correct procedures and using statistics to understand clinical data. Specific topics include but are not limited: Basic statistics, measures of correlation and difference, hypothesis testing and bias, confidence intervals, reliability and validity, significance, power analysis, levels of evidence, sample size and distribution, assessing effects of treatment, quality improvement, relative risk and relative risk reduction, and odds ratio.

Course Objectives:   

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Use the measures of central tendency and measures of dispersion.
  • Use concepts of estimates, relative risk, relative risk reduction, and odds ratios.
  • Use tests that analyze frequencies, correlations, and differences.
  • Understand the basic concepts of measurement, sampling, sample size, and sample distribution.
  • Grasp the general principles of processing and presenting data.
  • Explain, calculate and interpret inferential statistics including probability and hypothesis  testing.
  • Correlate the concepts of probability and the normal distribution curve.
  • Understand the factors that form the basis for hypothesis and statistical testing.
  • Apply statistical outcomes to processes of quality improvement.
  • Use statistical outcomes to evaluate effects of treatment

Methodology / Teaching Strategies:

Online delivery with asynchronous interactions between students and  students and teacher, interactive discussion, and application activity.

Course Expectations

Conduct / Honesty / Honor System:

Students are encouraged to take full advantage of many resources available including Internet sites, handouts, other textbooks and journals, faculty, and peers.  This interactive collegial learning environment is conducive to life-long learning.

4123 adheres to the MSU code of Conduct.  In particular, academic dishonesty, however small, creates a breach in academic integrity.  A student's participation in this course comes with the expectation that his/her work will be completed in full observance of the MSU code of Student Conduct.  A student should consult the Student Handbook for answers to any questions about the code.

Creed: “As an MSU Student, I pledge not to lie, cheat, steal, or help anyone else to do so."

Cheating includes, but is not limited to, (1) use of any unauthorized assistance in taking quizzes, tests, or examinations; (2) dependence upon the aid of sources beyond those authorized by the instructor in writing papers, preparing reports, solving problems, or completing other assignments; or (3) the acquisition of tests or other academic materials belonging to the university faculty or staff without permission. Quizzes and exams are not to be copied in any form or shared in any form.  Students caught engaging in such activity will receive and F for the course and be referred to University administration for dismissal.
Specific components of 4123 are designed to represent the efforts of each student individually and are NOT to be shared.  These components include portions of the written assignments submitted for a grade.  The group portion is intended to be a collaborative effort. Submitting someone else’s work as your own or improperly sited work constitutes plagiarism.  Please see the Midwestern State University Catalog for further discussion of plagiarism.  Plagiarism will constitute in an “F” for the course and the student will be referred to administration for further action. When students submit their efforts for grading, they are attesting they abided by this rule. 

Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, the use of, by paraphrase or direct quotation without correct recognition, the published or unpublished works of another person. The use of materials generated by agencies engaged in "selling" term papers is also plagiarism. 

By enrolling in this course, the student expressly grants MSU a “limited right” in all intellectual property created by the student for the purpose of this course.  The “limited right” shall include but shall not be limited to the right to reproduce the student’s work product in order to verify originality and authenticity, and for educational purposes.

Assignments / Activities:

In each of the units a quiz will be given using D2L.  These quizzes are open book, open note but you will only have one hour to complete them and must be prepared as there will not be enough time to research every answer.  Quizzes must be completed prior to the expiration date below.  Quiz grades and answers will be released after the deadline of each quiz.  Specific questions regarding the quizzes may be addressed to the instructor.  Quizzes may NOT be made up if missed and a zero will be recorded.  No extra credit activities are available.

Assignments are a significant portion of the grade and represent application of the material studied.  All assignments are to be submitted as instructed in each unit.  Points will be deducted for improper format.  Proper APA format must be used where appropriate.  Plagiarism will be graded harshly.  Assignments must be received prior to the deadline.  Late assignments are automatically dropped one letter grade per week past the due date and will NOT be accepted 3 weeks beyond the deadline.  A zero will be recorded for assignments not submitted or meeting the final deadline. 


The final exam will be given using Blackboard and will be comprehensive.  IT IS TO BE TAKEN WITHOUT THE BENEFIT OF BOOKS, NOTES, OR REFERENCES OF ANY KIND.  YOU MUST take the final exam at a college or university testing center. You may take the exam at ANY college or university testing center and some will charge a small fee to take the test. You are responsible for this testing fee to take the exam. You are responsible for making arrangements for a proctor by contacting an official from one of the categories listed below.  THE ONLY ACCEPTABLE PROCTORS ARE:

  • College or University Testing Centers.
  • Texas Computer-based Testing Collaborative (In Texas Only)
  • Officials at military base education offices

Completion of this course is based on satisfactory performance on the following:

Comprehensive Final Exam                             = 25%  

*** Nursing, Radiologic, and Social Work students will use the following letter grade scale for the course:

    90% and above        = A
    80% - 89%              = B
    70% - 79%              = C
    60% - 69%              = D
    59% and below        = F

*** Respiratory Care students will use the following letter grade scale for the course.

    90% and above        = A
    80% - 89%              = B
    75% - 79%              = C
    60% - 74%              = D
    59% and below        = F

This is because 4123 Data Analysis is a required course for the entry level and RRT to BSRC programs in Respiratory Care. All Respiratory students will use the above grading scale for this course and all other Respiratory Care courses.  

A minimum grade of 75 (C) is required in all respiratory courses.  Failure to attain a minimum grade of C in these courses will prevent the student from progressing in the program.  A student who fails to achieve a grade of C in any respiratory care course may repeat the course one time.  Any student who fails to achieve a grade of C in two respiratory care courses will be dismissed and not be eligible for readmission.

Note: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.

Plagiarism Policy

Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not.

Attendance Requirements


This is an online course and as such there are no mandatory sessions.  However, the student should be vigilant in checking email and logging onto "Desire2Learn (D2L).  Regular checks will ensure that messages from the instructor and fellow students are received in a timely manner. This course is on a schedule that will be strictly adhered to (see table below). I will be available to meet face-to-face with anyone who is interested. This meeting is NOT mandatory and please call in advance if you wish to meet.

Discussion Board Participation:

The discussion board is a mandatory component.  Assignments are made specifically for this board.  Students are expected to write formally (no shorthand or text messaging abbreviations) and use APA format and referencing where appropriate.  Thoughtful responses, constructive critique of fellow students, and meaningful participation are expected.  Keep in mind the discussion board is a formal assignment and part of your grade.

Writing Proficiency Requirement

All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed the 6 hours of Communication Core and and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course. Senate Bill 11 passed by the 84th Texas Legislature allows licensed handgun holders to carry concealed handguns on campus, effective August 1, 2016.
