Course Objectives

  1. OBJECTIVES 1 – 15


  1. To identify basic concepts or terms such as acculturation, ethnic-class, economic exploitation, prejudice, etc.
  2. Identify current biases in standardized test uses.
  3. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of minority group contributions to American society.
  4. Demonstrate an awareness of the cultural experience (life style, customs, institutions) of at least three ethnic groups other than his/her own.
  5. Evidence awareness of national studies relative to ethnic achievement, abilities, and grouping in public schools.
  6. Identify current biases and deficiencies in curriculum, learning materials, and teaching strategies perpetuation sexism.
  7. Demonstrate awareness of strategies for parental involvement.
  8. Understand what is involved in developing wholesome self-identities.
  9. Evidence awareness of different child rearing practices among ethnic groups.
  10. Evidence awareness of the need and value of multicultural and bilingual education and significant professional reports.
  11. Explain the concept of access as it relates to ethnic groups benefiting from the various social institutions (schools, government, business, etc.)
  12. Recognize similarities and differences among majority and minority cultures.
  13. To develop skills in communicating interpersonally on cognitive and feeling levels.
  14. To recognize communication patterns in self and others that enhances or inhibits the communication process.
  15. To understand the communication patterns of diverse populations and how they're verbal and non-verbal behaviors can be interpreted in the context of counseling.

  5. Follow established and professional ethical and legal guidelines regarding the counseling and teaching of multicultural and specific populations.

Course Expectations

Course Requirements


  1. Each student will select a diversity topic in your career field and "create" a case study to solve.  Your resolution will be based from information obtained from reading at least three articles dealing with your case study. A copy of each article will be provided to the professor.  If you are unable to think of a topic, please ask the professor for help.  The assignment must be at least three pages at length, 12 fonts, 1 ½ inch margins.


  1. Each studentwill develop a webliography on a culturally diverse issue that you need to become aware in.  5 URL sites and a paragraph about the site will be required.   Teachers must develop multicultural sites, trainers - training sites, counseling/HR students – counseling /HR  and sports administration sites.


  1. Each student will interview a culturally diverse person and write a 3 page minimum narrative of the interview.  During the interview please ask the person at least five questions that will assist you in becoming more "aware" about this person's culture.  As you interview your person, consider your present or future work environment and ask questions that enlighten you.  For example: HR students may ask your person what they think about Affirmative Action in the workplace.  Counseling/teacher/sports administration students may ask their person what it is like working with someone different then they are.  All students may ask the question of their person how they feel working with a culturally different person.


  1. Each student will keep a journal for this class.  In this journal you will write your thoughts and feelings following each class.  Each Journal entry must be at least one page in length.


  1. Group Presentation.


Please note each assignment may be a different culture, if needed, so that at the end of this semester, you will be more "aware" in different cultures.  The cultures to be addressed in this assignment are the following: Black, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, (European American if you are not European American) Elderly, Gender, Poverty, etc.  All assignments must be typed, double-spaced, 12 font, and have 1 ½ inch margins.  A cover page must be attached to each assignment.

All assignments are to turned into Dr. Kitchen.

Note: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.

Late Paper Policy

Student's assignment grade will be reduced one letter grade for being late.

Plagiarism Policy

Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not.

Attendance Requirements

Students must be present every class to obtain an A for the course.

Writing Proficiency Requirement

All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed the 6 hours of Communication Core and and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course. Campus Carry

Senate Bill 11 passed by the 84th Texas Legislature allows licensed handgun holders to carry concealed handguns on campus, effective August 1, 2016.
