Course Expectations



Syllabus Quiz:


1.         Complete the syllabus quiz located under Tests by 1700 on August 31, 2012.


2.         Students may use the syllabus to complete the quiz.





  1. Describe a clinical nursing scenario that reflects both “values-based practice” and “evidence-based care”. Explain how each is reflected in the scenario.


2.Maximum paper length is two pages plus a title page and reference page.


3.Attached the assignment to the Dropbox by1700 on September 4, 2012.


4.The grading criteria for the assignment are:


a.Written using correct standard writing style including spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, active voice, paragraph formation, presenting a thesis, and introductory and concluding paragraphs – 34possible points


b.Correct use of APA format including running head, title page, pagination, at least two level headings, citations and references. – 33 possible points


c.Used sufficient credible primary sources in a manner that supports the ideas presented. – 33 possible points





1.         For each of the four modules, students complete a quiz over content presented in the reading assignments.


2.         The quizzes are located under Tests.


3.         Reading assignments are posted on the Content Module.


4.         Students may work together and use their textbooks to complete the quizzes.


5.         Students may take the quiz as many times as they want and the final attempt will be the one submitted to the gradebook.


6.         Students will not be provided the answers to the quizzes. The students grade will indicate whether the student answered all the questions correctly.



7.         The quiz due dates are as follows:


            a.         Module 1:        September 11, 2012 by 1700

            b.         Module 2         October 9, 2012 by 1700

            c.         Module 3:        November 6, 2012 by 1700

Course Discussion Participation:


1.         Students will complete five discussions where they will build the content of their Theory Observation Paper and assist their peers to do the same.


2.         The discussions are located under Discussions.


3.         The faculty will randomly grade three of the five discussions.


4.         The grading criteria are as follows:


a.         Initial post contains substantive content that reflects the content of the course. – 15 possible points


b.         Initial post is explicitly supported by the readings (citations included.) – 10 possible points


c.         Discussion is succinct and well-organized – 10 possible points


d.         Responses to peers contain substantive content. – 15 possible points


e.         Responses to peers promote discussion. – 10 possible points


f.          Response to peers is explicitly supported by the readings (citations included.) – 10 possible points


g.         Initial post to discussion is posted by the due date. – 5 possible points


h.         Peer response to discussion is posted by the due date. – 5 possible points


i.          Responses to discussion are in correct standard American English. – 10 possible points

Paper Critique:


1.         Students will present a rough draft of their Practice Observation Paper via e-mail to their assigned reader by 1700 on November 13, 2012.


2.         Students will present a rough draft of their Practice Observation Paper via the Dropbox to their course instructor by 1700 on November 13, 2012.


3.         Each reader will critique the student’s paper using the form posted on the Content Module.


4.         By 1700 on November 20, 2012, the reader will submit the completed critique to the student via e-mail and to the course instructor via the Dropbox. The course instructor will return the draft to the student by this date and time as well.


5.         The grading criteria for the critique are:


            a.         Gave substantive feedback on the content of the paper. – 34 possible points


            b.         Gave constructive feedback on the writing style of the paper. – 33 possible points


            c.         Gave constructive feedback on the formatting of the paper. – 33 possible points



Practice Observation Paper:


1.         Students will write a professional paper developing a theory from their personal practice and comparing it to a published theory.


2.         Students will develop the content of the paper through the course discussions.


3.         Grading criteria for the paper are:


            a.         Summarizes the similarities among the cases. – 5 possible points


            b.         Articulates the differences among the cases. – 5 possible points        


            c.         Articulates rationale for the selection of the cases that provide the basis for their

analysis. – 5 possible points


d.         Provides detailed description written interpretations for recurrent themes within the cases. – 10 possible points


e.         Provides conceptual names for the recurrent themes within the cases. – 5 possible points


f.          Discusses relationships evident among the identified concepts. – 5 possible points


g.         Provides an illustrative diagram that clearly shows the described concepts and the relationships among the concepts. – 5 possible points


h.         Compares and contrasts the developing theory with a published nursing theory. – 10 possible points


i.          Writes a reflective interpretation of how the developed theory will change or promote his/her nursing practice. – 10 possible points


j.          Describes how developing this theory influenced his/her perceptions of nursing theory and its role in practice. – 10 possible points

Instructor Drop:


An instructor may drop a student any time during the semester for excessive absences, for consistently failing to meet class assignments, for an indifferent attitude, or for disruptive conduct. The instructor must give the student a verbal or written warning prior to being dropped from the class. An instructor’s drop of a student takes precedence over the student-initiated course drop of a later date. The instructor will assign a grade of either WF or F through the 8th week of a long 45 hours semester, the 6th week of a 10 week summer term, or the 11th class day of a 4 or 5 week summer term consisting of 20 days. After these periods the grade will be an F. The date the instructor drop form is received in the Office of the Registrar is the official drop date.

NURS 5103 adheres to the MSU Code of Conduct.  In particular, academic dishonesty, however small, creates a breach in academic integrity.  A student’s participation in this course comes with the expectation that his or her work will be completed in full observance of the MSU Code of Student Conduct.  A student should consult the current Student Handbook for answers to any questions about the code.


Many components of NURS 5103 are designed to be highly interactive with students helping each other learn.  Students are encouraged to take full advantage of many resources available including online Blackboard course resources, Internet sites, other textbooks and journals, faculty, and peers when answering objectives. This interactive collegial learning environment is conducive for life-long learning.


All components of NURS 5103 are designed to represent the efforts of each student INDIVIDUALLY and are NOT to be shared, copied, or plagiarized from other sources.  When students submit their efforts for grading, they are attesting they abided by this rule.

Cheating includes, but is not limited to, (1) use of any unauthorized assistance in taking quizzes, tests, or examinations; (2) dependence upon the aid of sources beyond those authorized by the instructor in writing papers, preparing reports, solving problems, or completing other assignments; or (3) the acquisition of tests or other academic materials belonging to the university faculty or staff without permission.

Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, the use of, by paraphrase or direct quotation without correct citation in the text and on the reference list, the published or unpublished works of another person. The use of materials generated by agencies engaged in "selling" term papers is also plagiarism. 

Academic dishonesty (cheating, plagiarism, etc.) will not be tolerated in this class. Whenever a student is unsure of whether a particular situation will be interpreted as academic dishonesty, he/she should ask the instructor for clarification.  If students are guilty of academic dishonesty, a grade of zero (0) will be given for the quiz, assignment, etc.  Cases may also be referred to the Dean of Students for possible dismissal from the university.

Late Paper Policy

Late Assignment Policy:


Assignments submitted between 1701 and midnight on the due date will receive a 5 points deduction. Assignments received after midnight on the due date will receive a zero (0). Students may request an extension of due dates by contacting their instructor via e-mail prior to the due date and time.

Plagiarism Policy

Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not.

Writing Proficiency Requirement

All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed the 6 hours of Communication Core and and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course. Senate Bill 11 passed by the 84th Texas Legislature allows licensed handgun holders to carry concealed handguns on campus, effective August 1, 2016.
