Primer of Medical Radiobiology (2nd ed.)
This book contains information related to basic radiation interactions and their effects on the body.
Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course of study the student will be able to:

  1. Apply scientific principles of cell biology.
  2. Identify basic biologic interactions of ionizing radiation with living cells.
  3. Summarize human cellular response to ionizing radiation.
  4. Explain living tissue radiation biology.
  5. Discuss modification of living cells and tissue responses to ionizing radiation.
  6. Describe radiation pathology in relationship to human systems, organs, or structures.
  7. Explain total radiation response to the human adult, child, fetus, and embryo.
  8. Summarize late effects of ionizing radiation on humans.
  9. Apply radiobiology theories and models to diagnostic and therapeutic practices.

Annotated bibliography:

First, locate and record citations to 5 articles in Scholarly journals that contain information that is relevant to this course (ionizing radiation, biological effects, etc.).  Cite the book, article, or document using the APA style.

Write a concise annotation that summarizes the central theme and scope of the article.  Include one or more sentences that (a) evaluate the authority or background of the author, (b) comment on the intended audience, (c) compare or contrast this work with another you have cited, (d) explain how this work illuminates your bibliography topic.  More information, resources and the due date are available by visiting the Assignments link.


Discussion Board Participation (10%)

A bulletin board is established for the course. Students should visit the bulletin board at least once a week, which is a minimum of Fifteen (15) visits during the semester. Participation in this type of classroom discussion accounts for 10% of the course grade and students should designate a time each week to participate in this class activity.

The course instructor will post a welcome on the forum for the class at the beginning of the semester. Each student must post one discussion-type question* on the forum for class discussion during the semester. Each student must respond to at least ten (10) posted questions.  I will count participation only when responses and questions are course related. One or two word responses do not count as discussion. Fulfilling the minimum requirement is based on weekly responses AND NOT waiting until the last minute to respond all at once. This is a forum where you can share knowledge and pass information to one another. “I agree” is not a response someone can learn from or build a discussion from. The student posting the question will serve as the resource for the discussion by their classmates.  Please Note: Questions and responses must by completed by the deadline specified by the instructor and found in the calendar of this course. The final date for question submissions will differ than the final date for responses. Please be aware of this.*

 The forum is designed to encourage interaction between course students. Have fun with this activity but take it seriously because it does contribute to your course grade. Please make sure questions are course related when submitting them to the instructor for approval. Remember that posting a question will account for a significant portion of the course participation grade. This portion of the course grade will be based upon two things: posting a question & replying to any course related questions/comments from classmates.


Note: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.
Late Paper Policy

Once a quiz has expired, it can no longer be accessed and will not be graded. Once an assignment is past due, 10 points will be deducted for missing the deadline and 10 points will be deducted for each day thereafter.   If the assignment is mailed, the post mark MUST be on or before the deadline. There is a tentative course schedule located at the end of this syllabus.

Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. RADS 3773 adhers to the MSU Code of Conduct.  In particular, academic dishonesty, however small, creates a breach in academic integrity.  A student’s participation in this course comes with the expectation that his or her work will be completed in full observance of the MSU Code of Student Conduct.  A student should consult the current Student Handbook for answers to any questions about the code.


Many components of RADS 3773 are designed to be highly interactive with students helping each other learn.  Students are encouraged to take full advantage of many resources available including online WebCT course resources, Internet sites, other textbooks and journals, faculty, and peers when answering objectives. This interactive collegial learning environment is conducive for life-long learning. 

PLEASE NOTE:  By enrolling in this course, the student expressly grants MSU a “limited right” in all intellectual property created by the student for the purpose of this course. The “limited right” shall include but not be limited to the right to reproduce the student’s work product in order to verify originality and authenticity, and for educational purposes.

Specific components of RADS 3773 are designed to represent the efforts of each student INDIVIDUALLY and are NOT to be shared.  These components include the WebCT Open Book Module Quizzes and the WebCTComprehensive Final Exam.  When students submit their efforts for grading, they are attesting they abided by this rule.


Writing Proficiency Requirement

All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed the 6 hours of Communication Core and and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course. Senate Bill 11 passed by the 84th Texas Legislature allows licensed handgun holders to carry concealed handguns on campus, effective August 1, 2016.
