Course Objectives


Description:            Clinical practicum in the evaluation and management of orthopedic sports injuries and conditions with a specific focus on the lower extremity, lumbar, and thoracic spine.  (Prerequisites: ATRN 2901, 2903.  Co-requisite: ATRN 3803).



Student Outcomes: 

  1. To provide athletic training students with the knowledge and skill of lower extremity and lumbar spine clinical examination and diagnosis techniques necessary for effective performance as an entry-level certified athletic trainer (ATC). Specific clinical competencies are contained in the Athletic Training Education Competencies (4th ed) and are posted at the end of the syllabus. 

2.        To provide understanding of the underlying principles and techniques of effective lower extremity and lumbar spine evaluation and assessment techniques.

3.        To facilitate critical thinking that involves application of scientific knowledge and problem solving to lower extremity and lumbar spine evaluation and assessment procedures.

  1. Utilize standard documentation procedures, terminology, and communication in the systemic evaluation and diagnosis of lower extremity and lumbar spine injuries.

5.        To give the opportunity for athletic training students to interact and learn from other allied health care professions involved in the evaluation and diagnosis of lower extremity and lumbar spine injuries.

6.        To assess knowledge and skills through assignments and practical examinations.


Course Expectations


Practical Quiz: Each major section will have a practical quiz to test your knowledge about the subject content.  This will allow you to perform skills that you will need in the athletic training room.  These must be scheduled with Gary during the week of and after the listed date.  For example, a Practical Quiz is listed for the Foot & Toes on 9/24/2008.  You must complete the practical on any day from 9/24/2008 9/30/2008.  Yourself, a partner, and the instructor must be available for each practical.  Allow at least 30 minutes per Practical Quiz.  Each Practical Quiz is worth 50 points.


Mid-Term Practical: The Mid-Term Practical will test your knowledge about Posture, Foot & Toes, Ankle & Lower Leg, and the Knee.  This test will be scenario-based.  The instructor will give you a short introduction, and you must complete the rest of the evaluation in a sequential order.  You must ultimately give an assessment at the end of each scenario.  Each scenario is worth 50 points, for a total of 200 points for the Mid-Term Practical.  Yourself, a partner, and the instructor must be available for the Mid-Term.  Some class time has been allotted for this practical.  You need to allow at least 1 hour for the Mid-Term.


Comprehensive Practical: The Comprehensive Practical will test your knowledge about the entire lower extremity.  This test is scenario-based.  The instructor will give you a short introduction, and you must complete the rest of the evaluation in a sequential order.  You must ultimately give an assessment at the end of each scenario.  You will receive 4 areas of the lower extremity to evaluate.  Each scenario is worth 50 points, for a total of 200 points for the Comprehensive Practical.  Yourself, a partner, and the instructor must be available for the Comprehensive Practical.  You must schedule this practical during the week of finals.  You need to allow at least 1 hour for the Comprehensive Practical.


Peer-Review Labs: Certain topics of major areas will allow for extra practice of certain skills.  I will announce in class the topics that will include labs.  Each lab must be completed with an Athletic Training Student; the assignment can be completed with a Level 3 or Level 4 student in the Midwestern State University Athletic Training Education Program.  It will be a simple assignment that will ask you to practice certain skills.  Your partner must sign that you completed the lab.  A due date will be given in class.  Each Peer-Review Lab is worth 10 points.


Clinical Proficiencies: Students must complete Clinical Proficiencies assigned to this class by the National Athletic Trainers Association.  Much of the peer evaluation will be completed either in class or through laboratory assignments.  Many of the proficiencies can be completed through Practical Quizzes, the Mid-Term Practical, or the Comprehensive Practical.  If you feel that you have completed either a Peer Evaluation or a Completed Proficiency, this must be turned into the Clinical Education Coordinator within 2 days of the event.  It is important that you maintain accurate records for your student folder.



***Please be aware that all Clinical Proficiencies must be completed by Thursday, December 8, 2011.  Failure to complete Clinical Proficiencies will give you a failing grade for this course.



Clinical Experience Hours: This course requires the completion of 250 clinical experience hours in the MSU athletic training room or other approved clinical site.  The required 28 hours during your Orthopedic Clinical Rotation will be included within the 250 clinical experience hours.  Each student is to record his/her daily hours on the MSU Clinical Hours Forms.  At the end of each week, these forms need to be signed by your supervising ACI or site CI.  Clinical hours are due each Tuesday by 5 pm in the MSU athletic training room.  There will be no exceptions without prior notification.  Any hours not turned in by the deadline will not be counted toward the semester total.  Clinical Experience Hours are worth 2 points every week if submitted by the deadline.  


Clinical Experience Journal: Students will turn in a weekly journal addressing a clinical question submitted by the professor.  The purpose of this journal is to improve/promote critical thinking and reflection of athletic training skills and experiences in the context of your clinical experiences.  Journal entries must be submitted as a MS Word attachment via email by 5 pm each Monday.  The submission may be in a free form style.  Midterm and end of semester submissions must address your clinical rotation goals and how well you are meeting these goals.  Clinical Experience Journals are worth 5 points every week if submitted by the deadline.    


Clinical Rotation Goals: Each student will set specific, measurable, attainable, and realistic goals and record these goals on the MSU Goal Sheet.  These goals must be discussed with the Clinical Education Coordinator and submitted by Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at 7:00 AM.  Clinical Rotation Goals are worth 5 points.


ACI/CI/ATS/Clinical Site Evaluations: Each student is responsible for scheduling a midterm and end of semester meeting with their ACI in order to complete and discuss the Athletic Training Student Evaluation of the student.  Each student is also responsible for scheduling a meeting with their ACI/CI at the end of their 28 hour clinical rotation.  Evaluation forms must be turned into the Clinical Education Coordinator within one week following the midterm, assigned date at the end of the semester, and following the final day of the 28 hour clinical rotation.   


Athletic training students are required to evaluate their ACI, Clinical Site, CI at their 28 hour clinical rotation, and clinical site of the 28 hour clinical rotation site and submit these evaluations to ATEP secretary prior to Friday, December 2, 2011.  In order to protect the confidentiality of your evaluation, ATEP Secretary will record your completion of evaluation requirements on a provided spreadsheet and give this sheet to the Clinical Education Coordinator. 


The score given to you by your ACI/CI is calculated into the final grade of this course.  There are 50 points possible for this evaluation.  Your point value will be the percentage given to you by your ACI/CI.

Note: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.

Writing Proficiency Requirement

All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed the 6 hours of Communication Core and and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
