Course Objectives

Students will:

1.      Gain knowledge and skills or motor behaviors of individuals with disabilities.

2.      Gain knowledge and skills of the continuum of placement of individuals with disabilities.

3.      Gain knowledge of motor skills assessment for individuals with disabilities.

4.      Learn how to adapt or modify motor skill, physical activity, fitness activities, and/or sports during teaching.

5.      Learn the motor skills, physical activities, sports and fitness activities to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities.

6.      Identify quality teaching of motor skills, physical activity, sports and fitness activities

7.      Increase awareness of current issues and laws in general and adapted physical education.

8.      Learn to adapt equipment for individual student needs.


Course Expectations

1.      Student will demonstrate knowledge in several disabilities, accessibility for individuals with disabilities, different disability sports and recreation programs, and modifying and/or adapting equipment.

2.      Student will be able to discuss the process related to the placement of an individual with a disability in general and/or adapted physical education.

3a. Student will demonstrate the skills to administer a motor skill assessment used to

       evaluate students who may need some type of adapted physical education service.

3b. Student will be able to use assessment data to develop lesson plans. (LP)

4.      Student will be able to teach motor skills, physical activities, sports or fitness activities  to individuals with disabilities

5.      Student will be able to describe strategies for modifying motor skills, physical activities, sport and fitness activities and instruction to meet the needs of his/her individual with a disability.

6.      Student will evaluate his/her experience teaching adapted physical education to a student with a disability and determine what she/he will do in future teaching.

7.      Student will demonstrate the knowledge of current general and adapted physical education issues and laws.

8.      Student will adapt or develop a piece of adaptive physical education equipment that will be used during his/her teaching lesson.

Submission Format Policy

All assignments will be due at the beginning of class on the day that they are due. Discussion paper, presentation, accessibility and reflection papers will be written using APA formatting (6th Edition). Any WebCT assignments must be turned in by the time designated on the day they are due unless otherwise stated.
Note: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.

Attendance Requirements

All students are expected to attend all classes. Participation points will be deducted for anyone coming in more than 5 after class begins.  Any course material or assignments are the responsibility of the student to get and turn in on time if they are absent. If a student is physically unable to participate due to illness or injury, an alternative activity option will be given by the instructor.

Other Policies

During this course you will be expected to deal with your subject area, your instructors, your peers and your colleagues as a professional. This includes dressing appropriately will be expected that includes no derogatory logos/wording on shirts, pants or shorts, no hats or sunglasses in class. Tennis shoes must be worn when class is held in the gymnasium or when working with individual students. Clothing should be clean, neat and appropriate for the setting, including footwear.  When presenting in front of the class appropriate attire includes dress slacks and a button down shirt or collared shirt for the men and dress slacks/skirt and an appropriate blouse for the women, unless they wear a dress or business suit. No cell phones, I Pods or other technology that distracts from full class participation.

Writing Proficiency Requirement

All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed the 6 hours of Communication Core and and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
