Course Objectives


  • To further understand the components of an employee assistance program.
  • To further understand current practice and legal guidelines for workplace wellness programs.
  • To further understand laws and regulations which impact provision of these programs.
  • To further understand how strategic service integration can increase recruitment, retention and engagement of employees.
Course Expectations

Assessment: Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of course objectives through completion of a research paper, analysis of current issues by a review of current articles, and satisfactory completion of a final exam. Assignments and point values are:


Weekly Discussion of 15 articles:       20%

Paper and presentation :                      40%

Pre-internship                                      40%

  • Articles

During this course, read news magazines and journals, specifically looking for items relating to employee assistance issues. The goal is to find 15 articles that relate to your future niche or specialty. These articles may relate to the topic for your research paper.  Provide a copy of the article for me and write a 1-page summary for each one of the articles and post the review on the bulletin board for the class.




  • Research Paper
    • Choose a topic related to your niche or specialty and research the topic in greater depth than presented in the text.
    • Provide an introduction, review of literature, a case scenario to solve and the solution to your case scenario based on the review of literature.
    • Deliverables:
      • Written paper using 15-25 articles, 30 pages in length, minimum. Include a cover page and reference page (not part of the page count).
      • The paper will be in APA form, double spaced and 1 in margins.
      • The paper should be edited by someone prior to turning it in to the professor.
      • The paper should have an introduction, review of literature, case study to solve, solution and conclusion.  This paper can build on the paper submitted for COUN 5333 Employee Assistance Issues.  The articles selected should add to your solution.  Or it can be a different paper.




  • Presentation of Paper


Students will present their papers and portfolios to the class on May 6th   at 5:30 p.m.  Each paper presentation will be presented in a power point format and the  paper presentation will be on campus.  Dr. Kitchen will provide the class the rubric that will be used to grade the presentations.






Students will be required to complete a pre-internship.  The pre-internship will allow students to bring up to 50 hours from the spring semester into the course EDUC 5583 – Internship.  A copy of the syllabus for the EDUC 5583 will be provided to students so that they will know what is required for this course as well as the pre-internship section of this course. 0- 25 hours will count for developing of the presentations and 0-25 hours will count for presenting the information.  Keep in mind that your presentations can be for your place of employment, church, service groups ( i.e. boys and girls clubs), and or other groups.  Students must come by Dr. Kitchen’s office to review examples of EDUC 5583 internship portfolios.

Grading criteria for exams are:

            90% - 100%:   A

            80% - 89%:     B

            70% - 79%:     C






Grading criteria for assignments are:

             A        =          0 errors


            B          =          1-4


C          =          5-8


            D         =          9-12


            F          =          over 12

Writing Proficiency Requirement

All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed the 6 hours of Communication Core and and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course. Senate Bill 11 passed by the 84th Texas Legislature allows licensed handgun holders to carry concealed handguns on campus, effective August 1, 2016.
