Other Policies

CLINICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

Clinical components:

 

The clinical components of this course include simulation experiences, patient care experiences, and any additional experience where the student is credited with clinical hours.

 

Pre‑simulation:

 

Students receive clinical credit for the completion of the reading assignments for the simulation experiences. These assignments are to be completed prior to attending the simulation experience. Failure to complete these assignments prior to the experience will result in the student being sent home and being considered absent from the experience.

 

Clinical Experiences:

 

This course includes 90 clinical hours. Students are required satisfactorily to complete 90 clinical hours in order to successfully complete the clinical component of the course.

 

Students will complete 3 to 6 hours of clinical/ hospital orientation.

 

Students will complete 9 hours of pre-clinical and clinical experiences in the Simulation Lab.

To schedule these hours use the Group function in D2L and select ONE date from each of the THREE scenarios.

 

Students will complete 72 hours of patient care experiences.  DO NOT SIGN INTO CLINICALS UNTIL AFTER DIRECTED TO DO SO ON D2L.

Using the group function on D2L, select dates from UNITED REGIONAL and select FOUR dates on 7C, ONE date on CCU, and ONE date in the OR.

Using the group function on D2L, select dates from UNITED REGIONAL and select FOUR dates on 8C, ONE date on CCU, and ONE date in the OR.

Professor Clark's Clinical Group section 204

               Using the group function on D2L, select dates from GRAHAM REGIONAL and select TWO Med/Surg, ONE OR (8 hours + 4 hours patient teaching development), ONE PACU (8 hours + 4 hours patient teaching development), ONE ER, and ONE Home Health/Hospice (8 hours + 4 hours patient teaching development).

 

Students will earn 6 clinical hours for completing Patient Care Documentation forms. These assignments will be evaluated using a grading rubric published in D2L. The Patient Care Documentation forms must be uploaded with the student's evaluation of the preceptor to the appropriate drop box within one week of completing the clinical experience.

 

Access Badges:    Clinical faculty will assign access badges to students, to be utilized for access to the clinical site.  Students should use only the badge assigned specifically to him/her.  Utilizing the badge of another student or failing to return the badge to the clinical faculty at the end of the semester will result in a clinical/course failure.  Lost badges should be reported immediately to the clinical instructor and to the facility security officer.  Students will be required to pay for the replacement of lost badges (amount to be determined by the clinical facility.)

 

Written Clinical Requirements:

 

All students will complete documentation and post completed documents (excluding the Preceptor Evaluation of Student Form) on D2L in the drop box for the experience. The forms to be completed are:

 

·  Distribute Preceptor Evaluation of Student Form to each preceptor at the BEGINNING of each rotation. The form is available on D2L.

·  Completed student care documentation form for each patient care experience completed. The form is available on D2L.

·  Student Evaluation of the Preceptor to be completed at the end of each clinical rotation. The form is available on D2L

·  Maintain a copy of the skills checklist throughout NURS 3423, 4023 and 4613.

 

 

Clinical Absences:

 

Students are responsible for notifying their clinical lab instructor and preceptor (or Simulation Lab staff, if it is a simulation experience) if they are to be absent. Notification must be made prior to the scheduled time of clinical experience. Rescheduling of simulation experiences and precepted clinicals is allowed only if the clinical instructor and Simulation Lab staff or preceptor determines it is feasible for the student to reschedule the experience. However, at the minimum, the student must notify his/her clinical instructor, Simulation Lab staff, or preceptor two hours prior to the absence in order to be eligible for a rescheduled experience.

 

Students are expected to attend all clinical experiences. Clinical instructors need the information obtained during clinical experiences to appropriately evaluate student performance in the clinical component of this course. Clinical absences may be rescheduled as patient care experiences only if the clinical instructor determines it is possible to reschedule these absences (due to clinical constraints.)

 

Clinical failures are awarded students who fail to meet the objectives of the clinical experience, students who fail to uphold the ANA Practice Standards and the ANA Code of ethics, students who fail to maintain patient safety, and students who fail to complete all of their clinical hours.

 

Writing Proficiency Requirement

All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed the 6 hours of Communication Core and and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
