Finance:

We have the STAR Lab for finance majors that cost several thousand dollars a year to maintain. The lab creates a simulated trading floor and gives students significant on-the-job-style training. The Lab features a full-color LED ticker and an interactive portal of financial information from Rise Display. Students use the lab to manage the College's investment portfolio and the lab also provides faculty and students access to financial and economic data for research.

Accounting:

The accounting department has acquired a tax accounting research database for accounting majors which will cost a few thousand dollars a year to maintain. We also have guest speakers come in and lecture every so often; for example, this year we invited the President of the Texas Society of CPAs to come and speak to our students. However, we do cover some expenses related to the visit.

Marketing:

Last semester, 2 students from the Professional Selling class represented MSU in a nationwide sales competition against 72 other universities such as UT, Baylor, Purdue and University of Missouri. They also had the opportunity to interview and network with 50 employers and sponsors. This gave them the opportunity to network with other universities, be exposed to how selling works, improve their sale skills, make lifelong connections with other students and experience an academic/professional conference.

Economics:

We were able to assist three students in representing MSU the 10th Annual Economics Scholar Program Conference for Undergraduate Research in April of 2016. This was sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas and Austin College. These students were each able to present a paper and network with the other universities and companies represented.

Other/General info:

One of the events put on for the benefit of all of our students, is the International Week at Dillard. As the economy becomes more globalized, we are trying to help students who don’t have a chance to go abroad, get exposed to the international mindset that companies value so much nowadays. We have food sampling, shows, and presentations from international students and faculty about different countries, cultures, and the different management styles that students might face whether they’re going abroad or work for a multi-national company here at home. The cost of this event is around $3,500 annually.

Another major need is travel funds for students to attend conferences and to present papers. Also donor funds are used to provide partial scholarships for students to participate in study abroad programs. In the 2016 fiscal year, 19 students were awarded partial scholarships of $500 each for British studies and 5 were awarded partial scholarships for study abroad in Erfurt Germany. This totaled to $13,750 in partial scholarships.
