 Geosciences:

Our Kimbell School of Geosciences has experienced a 178% growth partially due to the creation of a Masters’ program. This May we will have our first group of Masters’ students graduating – 18 students. We would welcome your support for scholarships for Graduate students so that we can continue to attract them into this program. The college is also looking into purchasing a large format plotter for the program.

Many professors use PowerPoint slides to deliver lecture notes so that students fully understand key concepts. However, we have several classrooms that are without a computer projector system and could cost about $2,000 each! The Geoscience Department is counting on gifts from alumni like you to help enhance student learning experiences.

Most careers in the geosciences are in a hands-on setting. As a result, we are transitioning to more field work. To do this, the students will need up to-date equipment such as new pocket transits ($300 each) and hand-held GPS units ($200 each).

 Chemistry:

We had students representing MSU at the ACS National Conference. Which they found to be very enlightening. The Chemistry department will have the addition of new faculty coming from Cal-Tech. He is a Protein Chemist and will be working on Fast Protein Liquid Chromatography. We need to purchase columns for the Protein Device and the columns for these cost about $2000 each.

Technology is undoubtedly crucial to a student’s education and unfortunately, the equipment doesn’t last forever. The Chemistry department is looking to replace some of the aged equipment and inoperative systems. For example, the Chemistry department has ten Melting point machines that are very outdated and would cost about $1,000 each to replace. Also, the Flash Chromatography System (purifies organic compounds for medicinal, organic, and pharmaceutical chemists) is completely inoperative and will cost the department $10,000 to purchase a new one.

There are other smaller, yet equally important, items that the Chemistry department is looking to acquire. For example, they need heating and stirring plates that cost about $500 each for laboratory exercises. They also need a fluoride ion selective electrode (a sensor that converts the activity of a specific ion dissolved in a solution into an electrical potential) that can cost about $450. ).

 Engineering:

3 students attended Society of Women Engineers Conference a few weeks ago and hopefully we can have a chapter started here soon.

Part of the degree plan for an engineering student is their Senior Design project. These classes offer seniors an opportunity to put all of the information they have learned into practice. This year we are proud to announce that each senior student was accepted to present at a national conference based on their senior design project. These projects can cost anywhere from $2,000 - $5,000 each.

The engineering department is always in need of scholarship money, which helps to attract bright students to MSU. Since 2006, we have experienced a growth of 178%. By bringing more students to MSU, the school will have more money to plan activities and make MSU even better!

 Math:

The math department has installed smart boards in the math classrooms and there will be training for the professors done by a consultant. These smartboards will enhance the The math department is always in need of scholarship money, which helps to attract bright students to MSU.  Biology:

All senior students in the Biology department have been accepted by the National Council for Undergraduate Research to present at a national conference.

The biology department would like to purchase some traps, weather stations and lockers for the Dalquest Desert Research system. They are also really hoping to get their basic equipment for their labs updated, such as; glass vials and caps, aluminum meter sticks, calculators, cell, skeleton and developmental biology models and five new Laboratory balances. The Laboratory balances can cost as much as $465!

 Computer Science:

The computer Science Department has purchased a Turing computer which can now give our students pre work experience as well as aid in the development of research projects in high performance computing. There is also an ongoing Virtual Reality Research project.
